VUKUZENZELE- NIA’S INVOLVEMENT

1.      What is it about....

Vukuzenzele is an initiative by the Presidency in order to get all government departments involved, through volunteers and without government funds, in a social outreach program and that the projects are run under the auspices of each government department’s DG.

2.      Core Message

Lend a hand to build a better life for all:  this slogan puts emphasis on partnership of government and society in all sectors and communities on the basis of active participation in the programme of action.  It evokes the spirit of volunteerism and civic responsibility.  It stresses the task of Nation building in the context of joint action towards eradicating the imbalances of the past.

3.        History of projects

Corporate Shop – a small mark-up was added to all corporate items which amounted to R 5 656,86.  This money was used to launch the first Vukuzenzele project, the Christmas project during December 2003.
Christmas Project (December 2003) – Members were invited to donate Christmas gifts to the children of the Eersterust Community and the generosity of the NIA members were overwhelming! The funds raised through the Corporate Shop were used to host a fun filled Christmas party where the gifts were handed out and lunch provided.  This project was a huge success!
Clothing donations were handed out to children in Tswane on one of the coldest days we had this year.

Our Vukuzenzele donations were presented by Ms Phyllis Ndlovu (Manager Executive Services from the NIA) to the Vos street community centre on the 30th of August.  The founder and manager of the shelter, Ms Antoinette Victor, received the donation.

VOS STREET COMMUNITY SHELTER

Fund Raising Projects - Corridor Change Collections (CCC) – volunteers pass through the corridors of the NIA HQ building with a Vukuzenzele Donation Can and appreciate all small change. (they don’t turn away notes and they don’t give change!   J)  This happens on a monthly basis.
Fund Raising Projects - Food Stall at Winter Games in September
Fund Raising Projects - Paper recycling The NIA library provided about 2.5 ton outdated books and paper that were recycled by Mondi paper recycling in aid of this project.
Provincial participation - Our Limpopo office also got in on the act.  On 2004 September 05, “CASUAL DAY”, volunteers of the Limpopo Province visited the NEW HORISON SCHOOL for severely disabled children and handed out sweet packs.
